News from the Agudah:

  • Yesterday, May 9, the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah issued a Kol Korei on the tragedy in Meron joining with Torah leaders in Eretz Yisroel by calling for tomorrow, Tuesday May 11, Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan, to be a worldwide day of prayer and crying. In light of the attacks on Eretz Yisroel today, we ask that tomorrow’s Yom Tefillah also focus on the wellbeing and security of Acheinu Kol Bais Yisroel b’Eretz Hakodesh. See below for the Kol Korei and Agudah's statement on the recent attacks in Israel.

Kol Korei from the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah
A Letter from the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah:
(Free Translation):
29 Iyar 5781
The day which transformed – from joy to grief, from festivity to mourning, from the great light of the celebration of the tanna Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai to darkness – Lag B’omer, is etched in our minds, and the memory of our deceased brothers will not depart from our hearts.
We are obligated to feel the pain of the grieving families; let all Jews weep over the destruction Hashem has seen fit to perform. Additionally, “A person who observes misfortune happening to him should examine his deeds.” (Berachos 5a) When that misfortune comes in the guise of suffering for our entire community, it is certain that we must examine our public’s deeds and actions. “Let us search our ways and inspect them, and return to Hashem.” (Eichah 3:40)
We, too, join with the holy call of the Torah leaders in Eretz Yisroel to hold a worldwide day of prayer and crying on Tuesday, Yom Kippur Katan, Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan.
May the Healer of broken hearts heal our breaches; may He send consolation to the mourning families and healing to those who were injured. May He accept our prayers with mercy and may we not hear of further catastrophe in our communities.
Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of America
Pray for Those Under Attack in Eretz Yisroel

Over the past few hours Israel has been under attack. Hamas fired a barrage of rockets into southern and central Israel from Gaza. For the first time in over five years Jerusalem was a target of the rocket attacks.
Our hearts are with our brothers and sisters under attack in Eretz Yisroel. We ask that tomorrow’s Yom Tefillah - called for by the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah in a Kol Korei released in the wake of the Meron tragedy - also focus on the wellbeing and security of Acheinu Bais Yisroel b’Eretz Hakodesh.

Tragedy in Meron

We mourn the loss of many Jewish souls taken from us tragically this Lag B’omer in Meron. Our hearts and Tefillos (prayers) are with their families. We Daven for a speedy recovery of all those injured in this horrific event.

We just learned that two of the victims in this horrific tragedy are Montrealers. We wish to express our most heartfelt condolences to the Gestetner and Steinmetz families.

הַמָּקוֹם יְנַחֵם אֶתְכֶם בְּתוֹךְ שְׁאָר אֲבֵלֵי צִיּוֹן וִירוּשָׁלַיִם

(May the Omnipresent comfort you among the rest of the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem)

We wish to express our gratitude to Mayor Valerie Plante and the other municipal officials who expressed their words of sympathy to the Jewish Community of Montreal.
